Step-by-Step
- Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two 6-inch round cake pans and line the bottoms with parchment paper.
- Whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl.
- Beat the softened butter and granulated sugar for 2–3 minutes, until pale and fluffy.
- Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then stir in the vanilla extract.
- Add the dry ingredients in two or three additions, alternating with the milk. Mix only until the batter is combined.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and smooth the tops.
- Bake for 20–25 minutes, until the centers spring back lightly and a toothpick comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
- Cool the cakes in their pans for 10 minutes, then turn them onto a wire rack and cool completely.
- Beat the butter for the frosting until smooth. Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, then mix in the vanilla, salt, and enough cream or milk to create a soft, spreadable consistency.
- Place one cake layer on a plate, spread it with frosting, add the second layer, and frost the top and sides. Decorate with soft, age-appropriate toppings if desired.
Notes
Bring the butter, eggs, and milk to room temperature for a more even batter. Cool the cake completely before frosting. For a baby-friendly cake, avoid hard candies, whole nuts, large fruit pieces, toothpicks, and other choking hazards.
