Step-by-Step
- Cut the prepared angel food cake into bite-size cubes of about 1 inch. Arrange about half of the cubes in the bottom of a 9-inch square or similarly sized trifle-style dish.
- Spoon about half of the cherry pie filling over the cake cubes, distributing the cherries and sauce as evenly as possible. Whisk the instant vanilla pudding mix, cold milk, and sour cream until smooth and thickened.
- Spread half of the pudding mixture over the cherry layer. Repeat with the remaining angel food cake cubes, cherry pie filling, and pudding mixture.
- Spread the thawed whipped topping evenly over the top. Sprinkle with sliced almonds and add a few extra cherries if desired.
- Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 4 hours before serving. Chill overnight when possible for the soft, trifle-like texture associated with this dessert.
Notes
Use cold milk and whisk the pudding mixture just until smooth and thick; overmixing can make it too loose. Spread the whipped topping gently so the layers remain distinct. Keep the assembled cake covered and refrigerated.
