Step-by-Step
- Stir the sour cream, prepared tomato salsa, and fresh lime juice together in a small bowl. Refrigerate the creamy salsa while preparing the tacos so the flavors have a few minutes to combine.
- Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and cook for 3–4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and fragrant.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds, stirring constantly so it becomes aromatic without browning too much.
- Add the ground chicken and cook for 5–7 minutes, breaking it into small pieces with a spoon. Continue cooking until the chicken is no longer pink.
- Stir in the chili powder, ground cumin, kosher salt, and black pepper. Cook for 1–2 minutes more, adding 2–3 tablespoons of water if the mixture seems dry, and stir until lightly saucy.
- Warm soft tortillas in a dry skillet or microwave. If using crisp taco shells, warm them according to the package directions.
- Fill the warm tortillas or shells with the chicken mixture. Top with lettuce, cheese, diced tomato, cilantro, and creamy salsa, then serve with lime wedges and optional sliced avocado.
Notes
Do not overcook the lean ground chicken. If the filling looks dry after seasoning, add 2–3 tablespoons of water and stir until lightly saucy. Make the creamy salsa a few minutes ahead and use medium- or hot-style salsa if you want noticeable heat.
